LinkedIn connection accepted? Great. Now don’t screw up the first follow-up.
Apr 21, 2025Most people blow their first follow-up message after sending their connection request.
And that’s a problem because that first message sets the tone for the ENTIRE conversation moving forward.
That first message is where your prospect decides one of three things:
#1 - this isn’t relevant for me → ignore the convo
#2 - this person seems annoying → avoid the convo
#3 - this might actually be worth my time → continue the convo
Most messages fall into bucket #1 or #2.
Why?
Because they’re lazy. Or generic. Or both.
“Just curious if you’re open to a quick chat?”
“Would love to learn more about your business.”
These scream the same thing: “I’m sending this to 100 other people too.”
No context. No insight. No hook.
And if you’re not catching attention with that first follow up message, you’ve already lost them.
So, here’s how to land in bucket #3:
Ask a question that’s relevant and unique.
Something that makes them pause and actually consider what you said.
It sparks curiosity, which can lead to a real convo
Your first follow-up isn’t just another message to send.
It’s a first impression. So make it count.
